What the heck does that mean, anyway, Baconator? I suppose it’s a riff on “Terminator”, but it could be taken as “bacon & tator” couldn’t it? Yeah, ok, I was reaching with that one. News came this week Wendy’s has rolled out the Bacon & Blue burger chain-wide. We sampled it when it was in… Continue reading Wendy’s Baconator

Portland, OR – Broder (Scandinavian)
I’ve been wanting to hit Broder for a year or so, but I always envisioned going for a weekend breakfast. I had a biz lunch date today with my client, and though we share a passion (and usually a hunger) for our meetings to be at dim sum places, today we were both in the… Continue reading Portland, OR – Broder (Scandinavian)
Portland, OR – ‘Etta – Violetta
There’s a hot new restaurant called Violetta opening in the spring – high anticipation for that day. Through a series of mishaps, opening has been delayed, but not the enthusiasm of the chef/owners, who want their food in our mouths as soon as possible! So they rolled out a van, to get their gourmet burgers,… Continue reading Portland, OR – ‘Etta – Violetta
Portland, OR – John’s Cafe
I’ve been looking for a place like this; in fact, I’ve probably walked by this one a dozen times and never noticed it. If you want a crusty diner, so smack dab in the middle of the transient population center, and there it will be. Like John’s. Short menu, short order, plain and simple diner… Continue reading Portland, OR – John’s Cafe
Portland, OR – Biscuits Cafe
Figuring I had burned off 30 pounds or so at the gym this morning, I was in the mood for a burger breakfast, and popped into a local chain “Biscuits Cafe” (menu) to sample their offerings. If you are a regular reader you know I like a burger patty and eggs, and you also know… Continue reading Portland, OR – Biscuits Cafe
Beaverton, OR – Big Red’s Western Cafe (Yawn)
A non-descript place serving non-descript food. I was there at 1PM on a weekday, and was the only one in the dining room for half my visit – then in came a father with three kids in tow. The only reason for my visit was I was wasting time waiting on an appointment, the place… Continue reading Beaverton, OR – Big Red’s Western Cafe (Yawn)
Home Cookin’ Day
Home-bound for a couple days called for home burgers. Winco 80/20 ground beef, 1/3 pound hand-formed patty, pan-fried on cast iron, buttered, toasted delicious cornmeal-dusted bun from Wheat Montana, Farmhouse Brand Thick Bacon, shredded Tillamook Sharp Cheddar, house-cured kosher dills, home grown Walla Walla onion, and French’s Yellow Mustard. Superb. And no tipping!
Portland, OR – J & M House Teriyaki Burger
Someday I am going to endeavor to find out the origin of the proliferation of “teriyaki burger” establishments in the Pacific Northwest. For those not in the know, no, these are not places that glaze a puck with T sauce, but rather combo Japanese/(limited) America cafes, diners, lunch counters. My local neighborhood one, J&M house,… Continue reading Portland, OR – J & M House Teriyaki Burger
Hillsboro, OR – Helvetia Tavern
Many speak of Helvetia as if it is the “mecca” of Portland area burgers. It must be, because one must almost go on a hadj to get there, it’s a hike out into the country. Nevertheless, Wednesday is my “out for a burger day”, so I trekked out past strip malls, housing tracts, petite wineries… Continue reading Hillsboro, OR – Helvetia Tavern
Portland, Or – Stanich’s -NOT!
“The World’s Greatest Hamburger” the menu proclaims. Google this place and you’ll find it is at the top of most every burger lover in Portland. An old neighborhood bar, walls festooned with sports crap-ola, Stanich’s has gotten down to the basics in burger lore. (Sound of car crash). Rant: Set out to eat here, got… Continue reading Portland, Or – Stanich’s -NOT!
