I had been here once before, albeit only for appetizers, which were more than satisfactory. Today it was a convenient location to meet up with Mr Portland Deal-Maker Attorney Extraordinaire, and try out the burgers, which are intermittently touted highly on various online sites. The joint is on Morrison, w/i spitting distance of the Max… Continue reading Portland, OR – AJs on the Rails

Wendy’s Baconator
What the heck does that mean, anyway, Baconator? I suppose it’s a riff on “Terminator”, but it could be taken as “bacon & tator” couldn’t it? Yeah, ok, I was reaching with that one. News came this week Wendy’s has rolled out the Bacon & Blue burger chain-wide. We sampled it when it was in… Continue reading Wendy’s Baconator
Beaverton, OR – Ringo’s Bar and Grill
When Mrs BDB says “it’s time for a cocktail”, one doesn’t argue – at least I don’t. I know better. I just slam the car into reverse or the nearest parking spot, as the case may be, and out we go. Today it was in beautiful (?) (sic) Beaverton, and the nearest purveyor of potables… Continue reading Beaverton, OR – Ringo’s Bar and Grill
Portland, OR – ‘Etta – Violetta
There’s a hot new restaurant called Violetta opening in the spring – high anticipation for that day. Through a series of mishaps, opening has been delayed, but not the enthusiasm of the chef/owners, who want their food in our mouths as soon as possible! So they rolled out a van, to get their gourmet burgers,… Continue reading Portland, OR – ‘Etta – Violetta
Portland, OR – John’s Cafe
I’ve been looking for a place like this; in fact, I’ve probably walked by this one a dozen times and never noticed it. If you want a crusty diner, so smack dab in the middle of the transient population center, and there it will be. Like John’s. Short menu, short order, plain and simple diner… Continue reading Portland, OR – John’s Cafe
Taste Test – 7-Eleven Cheeseburger
The label calls it “chopped beef steak with cheese on a bun”. This is one of 7-Eleven’s in-house offerings under their label “The Deli Market.” There is no indication on the package who manufactures this item for 7-Eleven, nor could I find any reference to it online. May well be that it comes from Lufthansa,… Continue reading Taste Test – 7-Eleven Cheeseburger
Portland, OR – Foti’s Greek Deli
I was on my way to create the perfect Greek hamburger. I had heard about the burgers at Foti’s Greek Deli, and while they are not in the top third of anybody’s “Best of Portland” lists, they are often mentioned as a consistently good, and inexpensive burger. I had my own twist on it in… Continue reading Portland, OR – Foti’s Greek Deli
Beaverton, OR – Big Red’s Western Cafe (Yawn)
A non-descript place serving non-descript food. I was there at 1PM on a weekday, and was the only one in the dining room for half my visit – then in came a father with three kids in tow. The only reason for my visit was I was wasting time waiting on an appointment, the place… Continue reading Beaverton, OR – Big Red’s Western Cafe (Yawn)
Home Cookin’ Day
Home-bound for a couple days called for home burgers. Winco 80/20 ground beef, 1/3 pound hand-formed patty, pan-fried on cast iron, buttered, toasted delicious cornmeal-dusted bun from Wheat Montana, Farmhouse Brand Thick Bacon, shredded Tillamook Sharp Cheddar, house-cured kosher dills, home grown Walla Walla onion, and French’s Yellow Mustard. Superb. And no tipping!
Portland, OR – Laurelhurst Market
From the guys who brought us Simpaticaand Viande Meat Market, Laurelhurst is a meat market by day (literally), and a restaurant by night. With one of the most interesting dinner menus around, and access to their own butcher shop, Laurelhurst cooks up some interesting apps and entrees nightly from 5pm. On a Saturday night there… Continue reading Portland, OR – Laurelhurst Market
