Cincinnati, OH – Gold Star and Skyline

What is it with Greek restaurateurs and a loyalty to Pepsi products? Like Chicago’s oft-parodied Billy Goat Tavern (“No Coke, Pepsi!”), I’m hard pressed to find a Greek-owned place that sells Coca Cola. Maybe the Greeks’ sweet tooth makes Pepsi a preference? (Late note from Ed: Bill Charuchas, 75 years old, Mr. “Cheezbooga” himself at… Continue reading Cincinnati, OH – Gold Star and Skyline

Duluth, MN – Coney Island Deluxe

The place that started it all, for me, at least in regards to my passion for “chili dogs.”  John and Peter Regis, (more Greeks!), started it all a million years ago.  Used to be 3 for a buck.  Now they are like 1.75 each.  Worth every farthing.  I used to be able to eat 6… Continue reading Duluth, MN – Coney Island Deluxe

Birmingham, AL – Pete’s

Birmingham provided an amusement with “Pete’s Famous Hot Dogs,” which the sign on the door claims “Est. 1920,” but the reality is it opened its doors in 1915, and the present proprietor has been on site since 1948.  There’s not much going on in downtown Birmingham these days, lots of empty 12-15 story office buildings,… Continue reading Birmingham, AL – Pete’s

Birmingham, AL – Krystal Mini Dogs

I couldn’t pass up Krystal’s version of chili dogs, mild curiousity.  For those of you not living in the South, Krystal is to Southerners what White Castle is to Northerners/   I wanted to try the Krystal “Pups” just because they were cute – diminutive versions of the chili dog, small enough to fit three… Continue reading Birmingham, AL – Krystal Mini Dogs

Birmingham, AL – Sneaky Pete’s

On to “Sneaky Pete’s,” an Alabama based chain, sporting 60 outlets in the deep South, some of which are. franchised.  Started in Birmingham by the Graphos brothers (there’s that Greek thing again), Alabama, at least, seems to have embraced the Sneaky Pete’s concept and menu.  One can even purchase “Sneaky Pete’s” Secret Hot Dog Sauce… Continue reading Birmingham, AL – Sneaky Pete’s

Montgomery, AL – Chris’s

Since 1917, the fine folks at Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs, on “Goat Hill” (Dexter Avenue), two blocks form the State Capitol in Montgomery, have been peddling their version(s) of chili dogs to the public.  Hard to believe, isn’t it?  Empires come and go, huge corporations like Enron, Worldcom, and MCI tumble, but sell the world… Continue reading Montgomery, AL – Chris’s

Culver City, CA – Cinco De Mayo

Formerly “Lucy’s #2”,   Cinco De Mayo is a place I have been eating burgers in the middle of the night for over 20 years.  Located on Sepulveda  Blvd,  between Venice and Washington in Culver City,   CDM is a late night hang-out for fans of fast, full-menu, cheap entrees.   I’ve always had cheeseburgers there, they offer… Continue reading Culver City, CA – Cinco De Mayo

Encino, CA – Rosti, Tuscan Grill

Who goes looking for a burger at a classy Italian place?   Who actually orders one?    PDXGwailo, that’s who.  While you guys are safely hidden between your screens vicariously,  I’m taking one for the team.  Or two.  Or six.   Mmmmmm, burgers. Rosti offers meatball sliders,  3 to an order, on fresh baked in house ciabiatta’s,  some… Continue reading Encino, CA – Rosti, Tuscan Grill
