{"id":9074,"date":"2013-05-18T10:05:22","date_gmt":"2013-05-18T17:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=9074"},"modified":"2013-05-18T10:05:22","modified_gmt":"2013-05-18T17:05:22","slug":"extra-value-frozen-beef-patties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=9074","title":{"rendered":"Home Cookin&#8217; Test &#8211; Extra Value Frozen Beef Patties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve\u00a0 reviewed a lot of these frozen patties, and to date, I\u2019ve liked <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2012\/10\/home-cookin-ball-park-brand-flame-grilled-beef-patties\/\">Ball Park<\/a> brand the most, even though they are a \u2018heat and eat\u2019 product, not a raw patty.<\/p>\n<p>Extra Value is an economy brand, manufactured by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holtenmeat.com\/\">the Holten Meat Company<\/a>, outside of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130518_074809.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-9075\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130518_074809-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"20130518_074809\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a>I bought a package of a dozen quarter pounders, and out of the box, they look like the pictures on the left.<\/p>\n<p>They require a medium\u00a0 heat cook, for a few minutes on each side.\u00a0 Usually the instructions for frozen patties say to cook on one side, until \u2018blood\u2019 runs from the top of the patty, and then flip for a couple minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I followed a similar regimen with this product.<\/p>\n<p>The ingredient list reads:\u00a0 beef, beef hearts, water, textured vegetable protein, seasoning, MSG, sugar, salt.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t put off by the hearts, but I was curious about\u00a0 the vegetable protein. \u00a0Vegetable protein is a \u201cmeat analogue\u201d, which according to Wikipedia, is \u00a0also called a\u00a0<b>meat substitute<\/b>,\u00a0<b>mock meat<\/b>,\u00a0<b>faux meat<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0<b>imitation meat<\/b>, approximates certain aesthetic qualities (primarily texture,\u00a0<a title=\"Flavor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flavor\">flavor<\/a>\u00a0and appearance) and\/or chemical characteristics of specific types of\u00a0<a title=\"Meat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meat\">meat<\/a>. Many analogues are\u00a0<a title=\"Soybean\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soybean\">soy<\/a>-based.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s that textured vegetable protein where the Extra Value patties fall apart, both literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n<p>While the general \u201cflavor\u201d of a beef patty is present, the expected texture of cooked ground meat is completely lacking.<\/p>\n<p>The texture while cutting, chewing, is more akin to the vegetarian patties I\u2019ve had.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t really \u2018cut\u2019, it crumbles.<\/p>\n<p>And for me, that\u2019s a deal killer. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what the end\u00a0product looks like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/extravalue2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9076\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/extravalue2-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"extravalue2\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Extra Value Frozen Beef Patties<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve\u00a0 reviewed a lot of these frozen patties, and to date, I\u2019ve liked Ball Park brand the most, even though they are a \u2018heat and eat\u2019 product, not a raw patty.
