{"id":8117,"date":"2012-10-18T09:02:21","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T16:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=8117"},"modified":"2012-10-18T09:02:21","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T16:02:21","slug":"regional-profile-sabrett-hot-dogs-york-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=8117","title":{"rendered":"Regional Profile &#8211; Sabrett Hot Dogs, New York, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The New York Pushcart Biz<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>How can a company like Sabrett grow to selling 35 million pounds of hot dogs annually, when the most visible face of their customers are the lowly push carts in New York City?<\/p>\n<p>Thinking of that business as &#8220;lowly&#8221; is our first mistake. \u00a0With thousands of push carts in NY, the city quit issuing licenses back in the 70&#8217;s. \u00a0They charge an annual rental fee for the sidewalk space. \u00a0Are your ready for this number? \u00a0Prime sidewalk space in NY can go for over $200,000 annually. \u00a0That&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, shell out all that dough, and the city will still set the maximum price you can charge for a hot dog. \u00a0Exceed that price, get reported, pay a hefty fine.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it appears to happen, you hear tourists tell tales of the $20 street hot dog. \u00a0Probably urban myth.<\/p>\n<p>The carts themselves go for anything from $1000 to $15,000 or more, depending on condition and how well they are equipped. \u00a0Plus you have to find a place to park it at night, which can run another $250-$300 a month in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s look at the math.<\/p>\n<p>Say you have a semi-prime corner for $100,000 a year to the city, or $8,300 a month.<\/p>\n<p>You purchased a cart for $10,000 and took out a five year note at 6% interest, your payments are $200 a month.<\/p>\n<p>Now you&#8217;re nearly at $9,000 a month before insurance, \u00a0buying supplies, paying yourself, employees.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose you work 5 days a week, 6 hours a day, 30 hours. \u00a0Suppose the city says you can&#8217;t charge more than $2 for a dog. \u00a0In the 120 hours a month under that scenario, you&#8217;d have to sell 75 hot dogs per hour just to pay your license, cart payment, and parking!<\/p>\n<p>Oh my.<\/p>\n<p>The New York push cart business is highly fractionalized. \u00a0A more interesting business model can be found in New Orleans, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.luckydogs.us\/index.cfm\">Lucky Dogs<\/a>.&#8221; \u00a0 They have the exclusive license to sell street food in the tourist-laden French Quarter. \u00a0The less than stellar hot dogs sell for over $4, or at least they did when I moved out of New Orleans in 2007. \u00a0Now here&#8217;s the rub. \u00a0The company employees mostly &#8216;down on their luck&#8217; folks as vendors, and pays them on a straight commission!<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t experience Lucky Dogs first hand, you may have heard about them in the best selling book &#8220;Confederacy of Dunces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you want a first hand account of what it might be like to work for Lucky Dogs, <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2009\/07\/my-encounter-w-lucky-dogs\/\">check out this yarn of mine<\/a> from several years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The push cart business isn&#8217;t for me, seems like an awful lot of work. \u00a0But man oh man I am glad they are around &#8211; all over the country. \u00a0Hard for me to pass one by without grabbing a loaded up dog.<\/p>\n<p>Not discouraged? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allamericanhotdog.com\/\">Buy a cart here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sabrett-cart.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8121 aligncenter\" title=\"sabrett cart\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/sabrett-cart.png\" alt=\"Sabrett Hot Dog Cart\" width=\"431\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Ed.
