{"id":7422,"date":"2012-06-09T07:17:59","date_gmt":"2012-06-09T14:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=7422"},"modified":"2012-06-09T07:17:59","modified_gmt":"2012-06-09T14:17:59","slug":"woodland-ca-dennys-diner-motif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=7422","title":{"rendered":"Woodland, CA &#8211; Denny&#8217;s (Diner Motif)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Imagine the comic book guy from the Simpsons uttering&#8230;&#8230;..&#8221;worst&#8230;&#8230;.food&#8230;&#8230;..ever&#8230;&#8230;.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>My bride and I hit a Denny&#8217;s 5-6 years ago, and vowed never to return. \u00a0As vows don&#8217;t mean much to us, we ended up at this location, in the middle of nowhere the other night.<\/p>\n<p>The gas station next door would have been a better choice for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered fish and chips. \u00a0She ordered some appetizer, corn chips and three dips.<\/p>\n<p>As to the fish and chips. &#8220;Icelandic (r) Haddock,&#8221; said the menu. \u00a0&#8220;Two wild caught fillets with wavy cut fries, tartar sauce, slaw, and dinner bread.&#8221; \u00a0Sidebar: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icelandic.com\/ab200.cfm\">Icelandic<\/a> is the largest importer of frozen fish \u00a0for the US restaurant industry. \u00a0Haddock is a popular cold-water food fish, they grow to about 3&#8242; in length, and are caught in depths of 100-400 feet by various methods.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional &#8220;fish and chips&#8221; has usually been cod. \u00a0True cod that is. \u00a0A lot of fish labeled &#8220;cod&#8221; these days, ain&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, my plate (below) was one monster fillet, and that in itself was OK, except the fillet was literally dripping in oil. \u00a0After taking this picture and looking at my newly oiled camera, I thought it was ruined. \u00a0Apparently not. \u00a0Nor was it yelling &#8220;oil can!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wavy-cut fries&#8230;.I wondered what that could be. \u00a0Turns out, it&#8217;s an extruded potato product (that means they take a mixture like mashed potatoes and puke it out of a mold to look like fries), and the result is what I would call &#8220;churro fries&#8221; (for the shape).<\/p>\n<p>Of the three dips on Mrs. BDB&#8217;s plate, (some queso thing, a salsa, and a spinach), only the spinach was palatable by any measure.<\/p>\n<p>We escaped with our lives and weren&#8217;t sick the next day. \u00a0More than I could have hoped for.<\/p>\n<p>I have seen the signs for Denny&#8217;s that are tagged &#8220;diner&#8221; over the years, and was never sure what that meant. \u00a0 This one was labeled like that, and I still have no idea what the difference is between a regular Denny&#8217;s and a Denny&#8217;s Diner.<\/p>\n<p>And I will never find out. \u00a0Because I wasn&#8217;t interested enough to ask, and I won&#8217;t be back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dennys.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7446\" title=\"dennys\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dennys.png\" alt=\"Denny's\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Imagine the comic book guy from the Simpsons uttering&#8230;&#8230;..&#8221;worst&#8230;&#8230;.food&#8230;&#8230;..ever&#8230;&#8230;.&#8221;) My bride and I hit a Denny&#8217;s 5-6 years ago, and vowed never to return. \u00a0As vows don&#8217;t mean much to us, we ended up at this location, in the middle of nowhere the other night.
