{"id":7319,"date":"2012-05-20T06:55:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-20T13:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=7319"},"modified":"2012-05-20T06:55:37","modified_gmt":"2012-05-20T13:55:37","slug":"portland-denicolas-italian-restaurant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=7319","title":{"rendered":"Portland, OR &#8211; DeNicola&#8217;s Italian Restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/denicola.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7322\" title=\"denicola\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/denicola-150x150.png\" alt=\"De Nicola's Italian Restaurant\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>It used to be my criteria for choosing a restaurant was to look for five words on the door: \u00a0&#8220;Most Major Credit Cards Accepted.&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0 These days, I am more apt to seek out restaurants that have been around for multiple decades, and DeNicola&#8217;s has been serving Portlandians for over 30 years. \u00a0They must be doing something right.<\/p>\n<p>We were out in the throes of a shopping excursion, and I suggested we pick up take-out sushi for Mrs. BDB, she never declines. \u00a0So she suggests (since I will pass on the sushi) that I order a pizza, and after an extremely weak protest from me against that concept, I succumb and fall into investigating on <a title=\"Delivered Dish Portland\" href=\"http:\/\/d-dish.com\/\">Delivered Dish<\/a>, a service I use frequently and highly recommend.<\/p>\n<p>My usual choice for &#8216;upmarket&#8217; pizza delivery would be <a title=\"Cara Amico\" href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2010\/12\/portland-or-cara-amico-delivered-dish\/\">Cara Amico<\/a>, purported to be Portland&#8217;s oldest Italian restaurant, and my favorite local pie for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<p>But I was feeling &#8216;adventurous&#8217; and chose De Nicola&#8217;s, as I have meant to try it for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>They say they serve &#8220;New York style&#8221; pizza, and that all their crusts are &#8220;naturally thick&#8221;, but &#8220;thin&#8221; is available upon request. \u00a0So I went with a thin crust Meat Lovers \u00a0(Italian sausage, pepperoni, and salami) and doubled up on the cheese. \u00a0 They call their 14&#8243; pie a &#8220;small&#8221;, but that&#8217;s the standard size most pizzerias call &#8220;large&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A choice of sauces is available, as well as a gluten free option, but I went traditional.<\/p>\n<p>The pie was delivered promptly at the scheduled time, still hot in the box. \u00a0The dough was on the thinnish size, kind of bread-like in taste, with a crispy rim. \u00a0Quantity and quality of toppings was above adequate, and they use &#8216;real&#8217; cheese as opposed to food service type &#8220;pizza topping.&#8221; \u00a0 There is a moderate amount of &#8220;hang&#8221;, and toppings nor cheese are firmly implanted on the crust not to end up in the box, always a plus for me!<\/p>\n<p>Reading different reviews on line, you will find references to &#8220;old school&#8217; type food, or &#8220;dirty Italian&#8221; (a phrase I haven&#8217;t heard before, not a slam, apparently).<\/p>\n<p>Verdict?
