{"id":5987,"date":"2011-08-11T08:18:47","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T15:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=5987"},"modified":"2011-08-11T08:18:47","modified_gmt":"2011-08-11T15:18:47","slug":"home-cooking-tofu-wtf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=5987","title":{"rendered":"Home Cooking, Tofu (WTF?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/tofupng.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5988\" title=\"tofupng\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/tofupng-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>There was a grocery crisis at the Burgerdogboy household last nite.\u00a0 Not a single burger, hot dog, or slice of pizza in the pantry, fridge, or freezer.\u00a0 Low on cash, so no delivery.\u00a0 Lazy, so no trip to the store.\u00a0 What to eat, what to eat?<\/p>\n<p>Discovered a hunk of tofu in the fridge, WTF?\u00a0 What&#8217; that doing there?\u00a0 Did someone buy it as a joke?\u00a0 Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>I had a momentary taste and smell flash back to my days living in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yung_Shue_Wan\">Yung Shue Wan <\/a>in the South China Sea.\u00a0 At Mrs. Wong&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.igougo.com\/dining-reviews-b152311-Hong_Kong-Sampan_Seafood_Restaurant.html\">Sampan Restaurant<\/a>, I would occasionally get some deep fried tofu with <a href=\"http:\/\/us.lkk.com\/products\/chili-sauce\/chili-sauces\">Lee Kum Kee Chili Garlic <\/a> paste as an appetizer, working my way up to an entree of pepper salt shrimp (???) (<a href=\"http:\/\/chinesefood.about.com\/od\/shrimprecipes\/r\/saltpepshrimp.htm\">recipe<\/a>), or possibly whole garoupa, steamed with ginger and scallions.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I could replicate that dish at home?\u00a0 That&#8217;d be OK. I mean, it&#8217;s not a burger, but what the hell?<\/p>\n<p>I went with a pan-fried version, using corn starch as a breading, in the traditional South Asian manner.\u00a0 Added some battered mushrooms to the meal plan, as well, and there not being an Chili Garlic sauce in the house, zipped over to Thai cuisine for making a peanut-chili-soy concoction as a dipping sauce.<\/p>\n<p>All&#8217;s well that ends well.\u00a0 Of course I made too much.\u00a0 But it was a tasty dinner, even without ground beef in attendance!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a grocery crisis at the Burgerdogboy household last nite.\u00a0 Not a single burger, hot dog, or slice of pizza in the pantry, fridge, or freezer.\u00a0 Low on cash, so no delivery.\u00a0 Lazy, so no trip to the store.\u00a0 What to eat, what to eat?
