{"id":53,"date":"2009-07-31T06:28:55","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T06:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterstromquist.com\/?p=53"},"modified":"2009-07-31T06:28:55","modified_gmt":"2009-07-31T06:28:55","slug":"burn-after-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=53","title":{"rendered":"Burn After Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Life and business these days, to me, is like living inside a <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Coen<\/span> Brothers movie (Fargo, O Brother, No Country for Old Men)&#8230;&#8230;.just when you think you have things all figured out, here comes another plot twist that throws everything you thought you could believe into a state of disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Clients keep asking me &#8220;what industries will survive and thrive?&#8221; If I knew the answer to that, I&#8217;d be spending my days online as a day trader, making a bundle.<\/p>\n<p>But one industry we know will continue to show at least modest gains, <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">with some<\/span> exceptions <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">producing<\/span> extraordinary gains is the food industry, and <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">particularly<\/span> the segment that <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">caters<\/span> to &#8220;empty calories.&#8221; &#8220;Junk food&#8221; sales climb in a downturn. Look @ McDonald&#8217;s same store sales and note the rises just from the dollar menu. I spent a good part of <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">yesterday<\/span> talking to a Frito Lay distributor rep, and in ten years with the company, he says he has never been busier than today.<\/p>\n<p>In  a downturn, people buy food that fills them up or satisfies them,  sometimes at the expense of <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">nutrition<\/span> or even economic prudence.<\/p>\n<p>A food acquisition (manufacturing\/distribution) might be an excellent target for you right now; it will satisfy your appetite,w\/o upsetting your system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life and business these days, to me, is like living inside a Coen Brothers movie (Fargo, O Brother, No Country for Old Men)&#8230;&#8230;.just when you think you have things all figured out, here comes another plot twist that throws everything you thought you could believe into a state of disbelief.
