{"id":4690,"date":"2010-12-17T03:47:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-17T11:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=4690"},"modified":"2010-12-17T03:47:45","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T11:47:45","slug":"portland-or-doner-kebab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=4690","title":{"rendered":"Portland, OR &#8211; Doner Kebab"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4693\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner6-sign-png.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4693\" title=\"Doner Kebab, Portland\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner6-sign-png-150x150.png\" alt=\"Doner Kebab, Portland\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doner Kebab, Portland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sign outside says &#8220;German food&#8221;, and<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doner_kebab#Germany\"><strong>doner kebab <\/strong><\/a><strong>certainly qualifies, despite its origins &#8211; it has become one of the most popular take-out dishes in Germany.\u00a0\u00a0 The words &#8220;doner kebab&#8221; literally mean &#8220;rotating meat&#8221;, and you might be familiar with the concept from other cultures &#8211; being similar to a gyro, or shawarma.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;d never noticed this little place at 515 SW 4th in downtown Portland, largely because the sign, store front, really don&#8217;t leap out at you.\u00a0 And for some reason, I discovered, I am more likely to walk on the other side of the street in this neighborhood.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But &#8220;discover it&#8221;, I did, yesterday, and was surprised, when I inquired, to find out they have been open over two years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to the rotating meat sandwiches and plates, you&#8217;ll find a wide variety of typical German sausages, including garlic, bier, brat, or weisswursts (the latter made from minced veal and bacon), as well as schnitzels, rouladen, and sauerbraten.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Doner Kebab has some vegetarian options, and salads as well.\u00a0\u00a0 My first inclination was to go with wienerschnitzel on\u00a0 a bun, however they only offer the veal on a plate &#8211; if you want a schnitzel sandwich, chicken is your choice.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I would have liked a little more flexibility from the kitchen to accommodate my request, but it was strictly &#8220;verbotten.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So I went with the garlic sausage on a bun, akin to a polish sausage in texture and taste, and the bun is more like the traditional flat bread used for the gyro-like sandwiches,\u00a0 but no complaint from me on that.\u00a0 It was stuffed full of a delicious kraut, with was generously flavored with bacon pieces, a nice surprise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div><strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4694\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4694\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner3-fries-png.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4694\" title=\"Doner Kebab, Portland\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner3-fries-png-150x150.png\" alt=\"Doner Kebab, Portland\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doner Kebab, Portland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They&#8217;ll bring you a nice tray of mustards, 7 or 8 varieties, which I thought was a nice touch, and although I am usually not adventurous in this category, I really like the wasabi-lime mustard.\u00a0\u00a0 Their specialty mustards are furnished by<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcness.com\/Household\/category.asp?_id=1\"><strong>Terrapin Ridge<\/strong><\/a><strong>, a northern Illinois company.\u00a0\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t heard of this company before, unusual, having lived in that area.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice change to see these, in a town where usually &#8216;adventurous&#8217; mustards are usually provided by local producer,<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/beavertonfoods.com\/\"><strong> Beaverton Foods<\/strong><\/a><strong>. (which is a very good product, as well). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The restaurant touts their &#8216;home-made&#8217; fries, which were kind of unusual.\u00a0 They have a slight breading, and almost the texture of an extruded potato product, but with bits of potato skin which would lead you to believe they are cut potatoes.\u00a0 The result is a very light french fry, fried in, I believe, one of the &#8216;healthier&#8217; oils, giving a tasty and not so oily experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Table condiments are completed by having salt and pepper grinders ringside.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This place reminds me of a typical casual food shop in Europe, and certainly that&#8217;s their goal &#8211; and they succeed, right down to the bathroom style and fixtures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The help is perfunctorily courteous, the food hot and fresh,\u00a0 This is definitely a new lunch stop for me, as perhaps a new take-out dinner choice (open til 8PM), and &#8211; for some reason, open 1A-4A on weekends for the bar crowd.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beverage choices range from Pepsi products to a dozen well-known German beers, little emphasis on local craft brewing here, and that&#8217;s absolutely fine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are more than a couple places to get your schnitzel on in Portland these days, but these guys really do it right.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/donerkebabpdx.com\/dinner\/\"><strong>Menus and descriptions can be found online<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4695\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner4-wurst-png.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4695 \" title=\"Garlic Wurst, Doner Kebab, Portland\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/doner4-wurst-png.png\" alt=\"Garlic Wurst, Doner Kebab, Portland\" width=\"448\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garlic Wurst, Doner Kebab, Portland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanspoon.com\/r\/24\/1459785\/restaurant\/Downtown\/Doner-Kebab-Portland\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 146px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanspoon.com\/b\/link\/1459785\/biglink.gif\" alt=\"Doner Kebab on Urbanspoon\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sign outside says &#8220;German food&#8221;, and doner kebab certainly qualifies, despite its origins &#8211; it has become one of the most popular take-out dishes in Germany.\u00a0\u00a0 The words &#8220;doner kebab&#8221; literally mean &#8220;rotating meat&#8221;, and you might be familiar with the concept from other cultures &#8211; being similar to a gyro, or shawarma.
