{"id":2061,"date":"2010-01-19T19:11:37","date_gmt":"2010-01-20T03:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=2061"},"modified":"2010-01-19T19:11:37","modified_gmt":"2010-01-20T03:11:37","slug":"taste-test-white-castle-frozen-cheeseburgers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=2061","title":{"rendered":"Taste Test &#8211; White Castle Frozen Cheeseburgers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/white-castle-PNG-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2062\" title=\"white castle PNG 1\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/white-castle-PNG-1.png\" alt=\"white castle PNG 1\" width=\"553\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve been going to White Castle for more than 40 years.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even eaten there when I have been stone cold sober.\u00a0\u00a0 I like &#8217;em.\u00a0\u00a0 The &#8220;southern version&#8217; &#8211; Krystals, I like them too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve had the frozen White Castles before, never had much luck with them at home.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t had them since I started this burger odyssey, and it&#8217;s a nite out for Mrs BDB, so it&#8217;s another burger night at home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m sure you are acquainted with White Castle.\u00a0 You may not know it was America&#8217;s first fast food chain.\u00a0 You may not know the &#8220;white&#8221; symbolized cleanliness, because in 20&#8217;s in the Midwest, just about everyone had read Upton Sinclair&#8217;s account of (non) cleanliness in the meat packing industry, and folks were a bit reluctant to consume ground beef.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So Walter Anderson and Billy Ingram made their Wichita restaurant the epitome of cleanliness &#8211; including spotless white uniforms, and stainless steel interiors.\u00a0 Some credit Anderson with inventing the hamburger bun, but you&#8217;d get an argument on that from many Portlanders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The burgers come in a six pack, 3 cello packs of two each, and they very closely resemble the ones in the restaurants.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The instructions are simple:\u00a0 open one end of the cello wrap, nuke 60 seconds if frozen, 30 seconds if thawed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;d never tried &#8220;thawed&#8221; before, so that seemed to be the plan for tonight.\u00a0 The burgers in the restaurant are frozen patties, with five holes in each, cooked on a bed of onions, on one side only.\u00a0 Orginally, they were supplied by Swift, and came 18 to a pound.\u00a0\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t weigh these, I should have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Following these instructions produced a burger with a taste and texture nearly identical to the restaurant.\u00a0\u00a0 In the diner, they are served sans condiments, except for one lonely pickle chip.\u00a0 I added a squirt of mustard to mine, and a handful of the Northwest&#8217;s own Tim&#8217;s Potato Chips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve bought them before, and I&#8217;ll buy them again.\u00a0 Especially now that I&#8217;ve figured out how to cook them!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/white-castle-PNG-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2063\" title=\"white castle PNG 2\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/white-castle-PNG-2.png\" alt=\"white castle PNG 2\" width=\"551\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been going to White Castle for more than 40 years.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even eaten there when I have been stone cold sober.\u00a0\u00a0 I like &#8217;em.\u00a0\u00a0 The &#8220;southern version&#8217; &#8211; Krystals, I like them too.
