\"Lake<\/a>I have been known to take road trips in search of small producers of\u00a0processed pork products, especially hams. Jumping off the interstates,\u00a0traveling back roads, stopping in diners to inquire about local products.\u00a0Never disappointed.<\/p>\n

The other day, I had been to a “pick your own” tomato farm, had a\u00a0bushel of the beautiful red fruit, stopped at a great bakery and scored a\u00a0loaf of rustic bread, so I knew I needed one more thing, some bodacious\u00a0bacon to make BLTs (I had lettuce in the garden at home).<\/p>\n

And with great delight, I happened upon Lake Geneva Country Meats<\/a>, on\u00a0State Road 50, a few miles east of the beach in Lake Geneva, WI.<\/p>\n

The establishment is a large store of meats butchered and processed\u00a0on the spot (factory\/store picture below), dozens of kinds of sausages, hams, chops, beef, as well as\u00a0specialty grocery items. It’s a modern, spacious, sparkling store,\u00a0with friendly and knowledgeable help.<\/p>\n

I scored the bacon, as well as an outrageously good ham steak. Both\u00a0products were nicely cured with seasoning and just the right amount of\"Lake<\/a>
\nsmoke. The thick cut bacon had great flavor and was very meaty.<\/p>\n

Products are a little bit on the spendy side, but I’m good with that,\u00a0to get diligently prepared products that actually taste like the animal\u00a0they come from. I’m a snob about that. So much of the mass produced\u00a0pork product in groceries these days doesn’t resemble actual pork\u00a0in either taste or texture.A real disappointment.<\/p>\n

Lake Geneva Country Meats is open from 8 AM Monday through Saturday.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, pay them a visit. If you can’t, follow them on\u00a0FB<\/a>,\u00a0Twitter<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, Pinterest<\/a>, Google+. They have regular specials with good discounts. They sell\u00a0some house-made rubs and spices on their website<\/a> as well and there are some good recipes.<\/p>\n

Family owned since 1965. P.S. The char on the ham? No, I didn’t burn\u00a0it. I like it that way!<\/p>\n
