{"id":15752,"date":"2016-03-10T14:29:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T20:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=15752"},"modified":"2016-03-10T14:29:14","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T20:29:14","slug":"rural-new-orleans-seafood-buffets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=15752","title":{"rendered":"Rural New Orleans Seafood Buffets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(This is from our archives, check on whether they are open before making the drive).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wq_pFSnO6I0\" width=\"400\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I am in buffet heaven, if there is such a thing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve previously written about a couple; I hit the other two \u201cmain attractions\u201d in the past few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Number one, in all manners of speaking, was the House of Seafood Buffet, at 81790 Highway 21, in Bush, Louisiana.\u00a0\u00a0Like most restaurants in these parts, they are open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and they live up to their name.\u00a0\u00a0There used to be a restaurant in my hometown whose slogan was \u201cIf It Swims, We Have It,\u201d and I think the same could be said for the House of Seafood.\u00a0\u00a0In addition to the usual fried entrees you will find at any indigenous restaurant, locally, the HOS has \u00a0boiling pots a brewing, and you will find ample boiled seafood selections to go along with your other choices.\u00a0\u00a0They also have very respectable beef dishes, delectable fried chicken,\u00a0\u00a0and a whole host of salads and sides, as well as the traditional desserts in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The second stop was the Ole South Seafood and Buffet, at 15273 Highway 21 South, in .\u00a0\u00a0Boasting similar opening days and hours as the HOS (but I believe Ole South is open on Sundays, call first), and a cavernous three room dining hall, the Ole South runs a distant second to HOS in my opinion \u2013 for selection, at least, but not for quality.\u00a0\u00a0Both restaurants prepare their food fresh, and Ole South also has a carving station with ham and beef, which HOS did not.\u00a0\u00a0Ole South has probably half the serving table size as HOS, but has accompanying prices which are less.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never been much of a buffet person, but I like these places, and there should be some of these in the city.\u00a0\u00a0We seem to have dozens of Asian buffets in (the best, by far, is Oki Naga in Metairie, IMHO), but none of these \u201clocal dish\u201d places.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m curious as to why.\u00a0\u00a0It may well be the cost of rent, because these places in the hinterlands are huge.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t ask the prices before I went in, and since waitresses at both restaurants asked if we wanted the \u201cbuffet\u201d I assume menu items are available as well.\u00a0Seems like if you deduct the price of your beverage (HOS has pitchers of tea on the table, Ole South has waitresses pouring, but they get busy), I would guess that HOS runs about $15 per person, and Ole South about $12.\u00a0\u00a0Both are good values, but I would return to HOS, and probably not to Ole South.\u00a0Just personal preference.<\/p>\n<p>Sidebar:\u00a0\u00a0Another recent stop was in Angie, Louisiana, at Stuart\u2019s Caf\u00e9, which is open from 5:30AM til 9PM daily.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t know when they get to rest with those hours, and we could certainly use a place with similar hours in Mayberry, where most restaurants aren\u2019t open early in the week.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I had the \u201cdouble meat cheeseburger\u201d at $4.00, and for one of the very few times in my life, I couldn\u2019t finish it \u2013 it was huge.<\/p>\n<p>But I was intrigued by another menu item, which I\u2019ll have to check out next time:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cmeat on toast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t that just set your mouth a\u2019waterin\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>New Orleans Seafood<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(This is from our archives, check on whether they are open before making the drive).
