This morning, like most mornings, the Hummingbird\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Grill has P.O.I.R. (police officers in residence). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Other denizens\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">include a couple of street people, a girl just off the Greyhound, suitcase\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">by her side, tattered romance paperback in her hand, trying to make\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">herself as small as possible to avoid eye or any other contact with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">anybody or anything in the Hummingbird, and me, accompanied as usual, by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the New York Times crossword puzzle, and two Uniball Deluxe Fine Tip pens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">I&#8217;ve become a regular, which I guess means only that the nite waitress,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Rusty, has seen me often enough that she brings my coffee w\/o asking, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">knows enough to call me by my nickname, \u201cHon.\u201d (How DID she know\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">that?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">It was kinda dicey sliding in to the Hummingbird this morning. I had to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">dodge the city workers who were power washing the sidewalk in front of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">cafe &#8211; and in their \u201cspare time\u201d, washing a car or two. They\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">must not be well paid, for in addition to supplementing their income with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">car washing, they helped themselves to a bundle of newspapers when I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">slipped my 50 cents into the Times-Picayune machine. Maybe they sell the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">papers to co-workers. Maybe they just use them to dry the cars.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Styx was playing on the Seeburg\u00a0as Randy took my order. I usually go for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the \u201cEarly Bird Special\u201d, which is available 24 hours, so I&#8217;m\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">not sure what the name means. It&#8217;s 3 eggs, choice of ham, bacon, sausage,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">and grits or potatoes, toast or biscuit. A bargain at 4.00. Coffee\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">extra, no charge for water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">One of the regular \u201ctroublemakers\u201d wandered in and sat at an\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">unbussed table and started eating off the plates that had been left there.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Randy has developed a sure-fire method (according to her) of dealing with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">these types of patrons, by proclaiming loudly \u201cthe person that was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">eating those pancakes has AIDS!\u201d Seems to do the trick and helps\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">clear the room without having to bother the P.O.I.R.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">It appears to take five people to run the night shift at the Hummingbird. In\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">addition to Rusty, there&#8217;s the cook, who does a marvelous job of juggling\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">several cast iron pans on a 12\u201dx12\u201d gas grill. He never talks,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">you don&#8217;t talk to him. Even if you are sitting at the counter, Rusty\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">takes your order and passes it on to him. Union rules, maybe lol? There&#8217;s a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&#8216;mop boy&#8217;, a dishwasher in back, and a cashier. With your change, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">cashier is fond of giving out financial advice. I think he&#8217;s going to be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the subject of the next TV commercial for that E-stock broker that ran the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">ad about the two truck driver that owned an island. Heed the advice of the sign at the cashier: &#8220;No talking to invisible people.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The low end of the menu is an order of grits for 1.35, Well, actually a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">side of gravy (brown) is only 1.05, but I haven&#8217;t seen anybody order that.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The high end is an open-faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes, gravy,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">dinner salad and roll for 7.50. It&#8217;s available Sundays only. In between\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the high and low price range, you&#8217;ll find the usual greasy spoon fare,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">everything from fried egg sandwiches to 1\/2 Fried Chicken dinner. Is that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">half-fried, or half a chicken?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Chile-cheese fries weigh in at 2.60 and off the Richter scale in fat and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">cholesterol. I can never figure out the difference between\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">chile\u201d and \u201cchili\u201d, beyond knowing that in this case,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">they really mean \u201cchili.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Most big-city greasy spoons have a certain element of \u201ccharm.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The Hummingbird seems to have been absent from school the day they passed<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">charm out. But I like it. It&#8217;s a good place to listen to people&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">stories in the middle of the night, or imagine you&#8217;re playing a role in that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Paul Simon song \u201claughing on the bus, playing games with the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">faces&#8230;.we said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy&#8230;\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The sun started to peak <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/hum2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15720\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15720\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/hum2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hummingbird New Orleans\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>through the smoke-stained window at the cafe as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Carl Palmer and Steve Howe&#8217;s voices wafted from the jukebox their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">terrific harmonies in the 1982 hit \u201cHeat of the Moment\u201d from the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">group Asia. Not as interesting as the material from their days in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&#8216;Emerson, Lake, and Palmer&#8217; or &#8216;Yes&#8217;, respectively, but a nice ditty for a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">piece someone my age\u00a0\u00a0would label as \u201cnew music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Most days I miss the past. At places like the Hummingbird, I get to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">relive it every night.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Catch the crew of the Hummingbird nightly at 804 St. Charles, 24\/7. Catch\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Asia on tour this winter if you find yourselves in cities like Lorsch, Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">If I were Don Henley, I&#8217;d find something romantic to write about the Hummingbird,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the way he did about the \u201cSunset Grill\u201d in LA. But even the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Sunset Grill is not what it was, in LA they tear down anything that is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">more than 20 years old, and the Sunset Grill today is a gleaming new white\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">stucco building, instead of the dilapidated old shack with stools on the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">sidewalk with all its old charm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The Hummingbird is just old. Charm costs extra these days.
