{"id":14305,"date":"2015-06-02T06:42:29","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T11:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=14305"},"modified":"2015-06-02T06:42:29","modified_gmt":"2015-06-02T11:42:29","slug":"duluth-huskies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=14305","title":{"rendered":"Duluth Huskies Baseball, Hot Dogs, and an Arco Coffee Can (1 pound)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender-18.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14313\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender-18-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Duluth Huskies\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>(Pay attention here, cause I am going to veer wildly off topic!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My brother went to a baseball game last night (along with 700 other hearty souls), the <a href=\"http:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/duluth-huskies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duluth Huskies<\/a>, a team in the summer collegiate league; the game was held at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wade_Stadium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wade Stadium<\/a> in West Duluth, which seats 4200, and was built as a WPA project with over 300,000 bricks that another WPA project had produced by stripping brick paved streets in Duluth. \u00a0Relevant to nothing, it was 45 degrees during the game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From the early 1930s through the 90s, Wade Stadium was home to various versions of the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duluth_Dukes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duluth Dukes<\/a>,&#8221; a single A team at time affiliated with the Cardinals, Tigers, Cubs, or White Sox over the years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Twelve players from the 1968 Detroit Tigers World Series championship team played for the Duluth-Superior Dukes of the 1960s, including Denny McLain, Bill Freehan, Willie Horton, and John Hiller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">McLain was playing for the &#8217;66 Dukes, when my grandfather took \u00a0a bunch of us grand kids to a game on the night of July 3. Some of my siblings and cousins were in attendance, but I don&#8217;t remember my brother being there, of course at that time, he was old enough to be far too cool to do family stuff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My grandfather, an immigrant, whose motto was &#8220;live every day until you die,&#8221; did. A snuff user, he used to have a 1 pound empty <a href=\"http:\/\/arcocoffee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arco coffee<\/a> can on the dash or floor of his Oldsmobile, which served as a handy spittoon. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember much about the game, or the night, except the next morning, learning that my grandfather had passed in his sleep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Huskies have local owners these days, including a gentleman named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duluthbudgeteer.com\/content\/owning-baseball-club-childs-dream-come-true  Mike Rosenzweig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Rosenzweig<\/a>, a guy who I have a shared history with: \u00a0in seventh grade, he, I and two other guys suffered the humiliation of being dressed in leiderhosen and appearing as a German &#8220;Oom-pah-pah&#8221; band at the junior hight &#8220;talent show&#8221; at the insistence of a sadistic\u00a0band instructor. \u00a0An experience I am sure we would all like to put behind us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I can&#8217;t say what it&#8217;s like to own a summer collegiate baseball team, but if you ever get a chance to invest in an A, AA, or AAA team affiliated with one of the majors, grab it &#8211; it&#8217;s a fabulous revenue model, unequaled in any industry I know of.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But back on the \u00a0topic of this site. \u00a0My brother and his group enjoyed a bevy of traditional baseball treats at the game, at minor league prices &#8211; a hot dog ($3.25), bratwurst ($4.75), pretzel ($3.00), popcorn, \u00a0peanuts, cracker jacks, and Swedish Fish <strong>?!<\/strong> ($3.00) &#8212; and a good time was had by all. \u00a0(Except I have no idea who would put ketchup on a bratwurst!).<\/p>\n<p>And by the way? \u00a0Last night, the Huskies came from behind, and topped Thunder Bay, 4-3.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender_1-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-14315\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender_1-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Duluth Huskies\" width=\"439\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender-19.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-14314\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/FullSizeRender-19-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Duluth Huskies\" width=\"451\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Duluth Huskies<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eating baseball food at the Duluth Huskies game, Duluth, Minnesota. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[15,16],"tags":[103,583],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14305"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=14305"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14305\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=14305"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=14305"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=14305"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
