{"id":12709,"date":"2009-06-10T08:08:17","date_gmt":"2009-06-10T15:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hamburgersaremylife.wordpress.com\/?p=6"},"modified":"2009-06-10T08:08:17","modified_gmt":"2009-06-10T15:08:17","slug":"portland-or-capitol-highway-deli-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=12709","title":{"rendered":"Portland, Or &#8211; Capitol Highway Deli Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Off the Meaten Path<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first blush, your fear is probably that \u00a0this is going to be a non-meat story.\u00a0 T\u2019aint so.\u00a0\u00a0 It is, however, about an \u201calternative\u201d burger, one that might be as close as your corner, like it is mine.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-cooked somewhere west of\u00a0 Wherethehellisthat? Ohio, flash-frozen (one hopes) \u00a0and shipped to a corner mini mart, office vending machine, or aircraft carrier near you, \u00a0the Big Az burger with processed American cheese slice, boasts a full 9.65 ounces of flavor on a sesame seed bun, all \u00a0for less than $3.<\/p>\n<p>It comes sans condiments, allowing you to decorate at your whim. \u00a0\u00a0My choice, as pictured, is pickle, onion, mustard.\u00a0 And some potato by-product from Lay\u2019s that I had around the house.\u00a0\u00a0 If you think the bun looks kinda squished, you\u2019re right.\u00a0\u00a0 My fault.<\/p>\n<p>This particularly delicious delight requires some home preparation, obviously.\u00a0\u00a0 I get the best results by doing the bun and patty separately, or at least for different lengths of time.\u00a0 Your mileage may vary.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know, you\u2019re asking \u201cgwailo, how did you discover such a tasty morsel?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Well, you see kids, my significant better 2\/3rds doesn\u2019t care for ground beef, in any form or fashion, so I am compelled to seek the manna of the gods outside of my domestic environs.\u00a0 My connection for the Big Az is the corner liquor store, @ Pomona and Capitol Highway,\u00a0 spitting distance from my house.\u00a0\u00a0 To reduce my carbon footprint, I limit my burgers to those within walking distance.<\/p>\n<p>And avoid places that promise \u201clocally harvested sustainable beef.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I abstain from sustain.\u00a0\u00a0 I won\u2019t be on the planet long enough to care.<\/p>\n<p>I know you are dubious.\u00a0\u00a0 But these are honestly better than any fast food burgers, with the exception of Fatburger and In N Out, both of which have not graced Portland with their presence.\u00a0 It has always struck me as odd that Fatburger is owned by a Portland company, but doesn\u2019t have an outlet here.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a tea party is in order?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11\" title=\"DSCN1164\" src=\"http:\/\/hamburgersaremylife.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/06\/dscn11641.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"DSCN1164\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9\" title=\"DSCN1168\" src=\"http:\/\/hamburgersaremylife.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/06\/dscn1168.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"DSCN1168\" width=\"300\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8\" title=\"DSCN1169\" src=\"http:\/\/hamburgersaremylife.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/06\/dscn1169.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"DSCN1169\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Off the Meaten Path At first blush, your fear is probably that \u00a0this is going to be a non-meat story.\u00a0 T\u2019aint so.\u00a0\u00a0 It is, however, about an \u201calternative\u201d burger, one that might be as close as your corner, like it is mine.
