{"id":12492,"date":"2014-10-22T13:16:54","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T20:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=12492"},"modified":"2014-10-22T13:16:54","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T20:16:54","slug":"tony-packo-hot-dog-sauce-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=12492","title":{"rendered":"Tony Packo Hot Dog Sauce Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hot_dog_sauce.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-12499\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hot_dog_sauce-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Tony Packo Hot Dog Sauce Review\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Local Toledo hot dog legend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonypacko.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tony Packo&#8217;<\/a>s has been around for 70-80 years, and is the birthplace of the &#8220;Hungarian Style Hot Dog.&#8221; \u00a0 Now with five locations, the business received a lot of publicity as the home town favorite of the TV character &#8220;Max Klinger&#8221; on the long-run sitcom &#8220;MASH.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Toledo is about halfway between two distinct \u00a0&#8220;coney island hot dog&#8221; territories. \u00a0And all three are distinctly different in flavor and texture. \u00a0To the north, you find the Detroit style like <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2013\/08\/coney-island-style-hot-dog-introduced-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Coney<\/a>, heavy on meat and a beefy taste &#8211; \u00a0in Ohio you have the dueling chains of <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2009\/06\/cincinnati-oh-gold-star-and-skyline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyline and GoldStar<\/a>, and both of their coney sauces have a &#8216;sweet&#8217; element in them. \u00a0Some fans say chocolate, some say cinnamon. \u00a0They are both good, and you can purchase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanconeyisland.com\/coneykit.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complete Detroit kits<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/store.cincyfavorites.com\/chili-c25.aspx?gclid=CjwKEAjw5ZKiBRDhqa-Yjcml9kYSJABia-RnzuqDHMk_PLisZGk4ZT6cfLcJifFptCsG8teWSzU5ChoClXHw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyline ingredients<\/a> online. \u00a0And you should. \u00a0Often.<\/p>\n<p>So Packo&#8217;s sells their sauce in little 8 ounce cans (pictured), less than a buck and a half, if I recall, and the promotional material says it is enough for five hot dogs. \u00a0I think that&#8217;s conservative, you could probably schmear the sauce on 8-10 I&#8217;ll betcha.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients include: beef, water, chili spice, textured vegetable protein, sugar, salt, corn starch, and garlic. \u00a0The distinctive characteristics of Packo&#8217;s are 1) the presence of the chili pepper is very evident, as is the sugar. \u00a0The sauce is sweeter and hotter than the Detroit or Ohio styles.<\/p>\n<p>There is a layer of flavor deep in there that reminds me of say, Hormel Chili. \u00a0Which isn&#8217;t a turn off, just &#8216;different&#8217; for a coney type sauce. \u00a0In my experience. Your mileage may vary. \u00a0Below are pix of the sauce in the can, out of the can, and after heating. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/peterstromqui-20\/detail\/B00473RERI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shop online <\/a>if you can&#8217;t find at your grocery. \u00a0In addition to hot dog sauce, <a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/peterstromqui-20\/detail\/B0002DOEWA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packo&#8217;s sells pickles<\/a>, noodles, peppers, chili, barbecue sauce, relish and ketchup. \u00a0And yes, I&#8217;d buy this again.
