{"id":1242,"date":"2009-09-25T09:06:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-25T16:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=1242"},"modified":"2009-09-25T09:06:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-25T16:06:00","slug":"my-introduction-to-the-fast-food-burger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=1242","title":{"rendered":"My Introduction to the Fast Food Burger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>McDonald&#8217;s was late in coming to my city.\u00a0\u00a0 One had to drive\u00a0 150 miles to get to one when I was growing up.\u00a0\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not to say my town was fast food-less.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to locally-owned establishments, our first burger chain entry was Henry&#8217;s, followed a few years later by Sandy&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Both were Midwestern chains, eventually both reaching between 150-200 outlets before fading from the scene.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sandy&#8217;s was started in Illinois by a couple of guys who had one of the first McDonald&#8217;s franchises, got mad at Ray<a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/henryssign955.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1243\" title=\"henryssign955\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/henryssign955-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"henryssign955\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> Kroc, sued him, then started up their own deal.<\/p>\n<p>Henry&#8217;s was started as an off-shoot of Bressler&#8217;s Ice Cream, in order to cash in on the drive-in craze, and to have additional outlets to sell their ice cream.\u00a0\u00a0 In the early days, Henry&#8217;s outlets far-outnumber McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>I remember our family going to Henry&#8217;s on very rare occasions, probably when my mom was managing the brood because my dad was out of town.\u00a0 I do remember the sign that touted the 15 cent burger, or ten for a buck promotion.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy&#8217;s was a bit more full-line, with a &#8220;Scottish&#8221; theme, eventually sold out and converted the units to Hardees.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an old Sandy&#8217;s commercial.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"340\" height=\"285\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2DOM-7PD3b4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;border=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"340\" height=\"285\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2DOM-7PD3b4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;border=1\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/sandysfastfoodpicture.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1244\" title=\"sandysfastfoodpicture\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/sandysfastfoodpicture.jpg\" alt=\"sandysfastfoodpicture\" width=\"538\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/sandyscolorbuilding.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245\" title=\"sandyscolorbuilding\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/sandyscolorbuilding.jpg\" alt=\"sandyscolorbuilding\" width=\"518\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McDonald&#8217;s was late in coming to my city.\u00a0\u00a0 One had to drive\u00a0 150 miles to get to one when I was growing up.\u00a0\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not to say my town was fast food-less.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition to locally-owned establishments, our first burger chain entry was Henry&#8217;s, followed a few years later by Sandy&#8217;s.
