{"id":12306,"date":"2014-10-06T09:43:26","date_gmt":"2014-10-06T16:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=12306"},"modified":"2014-10-06T09:43:26","modified_gmt":"2014-10-06T16:43:26","slug":"butterball-turkey-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=12306","title":{"rendered":"Butterball Turkey Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A registered trademark since 1940, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterball.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Butterball<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0came into wide use in the 60s by Swift &amp; Company and the brand was eventually spun to ConAgra. \u00a0Today the line of fresh and frozen turkeys and a host of turkey derived products is owned by Kansas based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seaboardcorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seaboard Corporation<\/a>, a diversified multinational, that also operates other food companies like<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prairiefresh.com\/PrairieFresh\/Product-ViewBrand\/Index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Prairie Fresh <\/a>pork products, heat and eat pork products featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetbabyraysmeats.com\/ProductSection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweet Baby Ray&#8217;s<\/a> sauces, and Daily&#8217;s processed pork products, like bacon, hams, and sausage. \u00a0Vertically integrated in the pork business, Seaboard owns their own kill plants, processing 19,000 hogs daily at their Guymon, OK location.<\/p>\n<p>Today Butterball, based in North Carolina, sells over a billion pounds of turkey annually, which includes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterball.com\/products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">processed products<\/a>, like hot dogs, sausage, cold cuts, bacon, and ground turkey. <em><strong>\u00a0(Do you realize that a billion pounds translates roughly into 66 million turkey legs? \u00a0Who knew there was enough Renaissance Fairs to handle all that product?)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One such product is a heat and eat meal, &#8220;Everyday Chef Selects&#8221; Turkey Breast and Gravy. \u00a0This 15 ounce package can be heated as a boiling bag or 5-6 minutes in the microwave, and seems pretty straightforward on the ingredient side. \u00a0According to the package, this product is put together at Smithfield&#8217;s \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmhfoods.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RMH Foods<\/a> plant in Morton, IL, USDA establishment 17789B (pictured below).<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing about the ingredient list is that it does NOT include the phrase &#8220;may contain a solution of XX %&#8230;&#8230;To me, brine injected beef, pork, and poultry has the most horrible texture. \u00a0I just can&#8217;t stomach (or chew) it.<\/p>\n<p>So I went with the boiling bag heating option, simmered for about seven minutes (after bringing the water to a boil). \u00a0I was pleased to open the bag and find actual &#8216;chunks&#8217; of turkey muscle meat, and not &#8220;chopped, pressed, and formed&#8221; slices. \u00a0Whew. \u00a0This product is good, surprisingly good. \u00a0And for the single person or couple that can&#8217;t or doesn&#8217;t want to shell out $25 \u00a0&#8211; $30 for a whole turkey,and go to the hassle of fixing a huge holiday meal, this is a good solution. \u00a0 Product plated, pictured below (mashed potatoes not included in package). \u00a0I generally don&#8217;t enjoy reheated poultry of any kind, but this product doesn&#8217;t give you that tactile\/taste sensation. I&#8217;d buy it again. \u00a0I might stock up if they can be frozen. \u00a0Time to make a call!<\/p>\n<p>The only exception I take with the packaging is that it suggests it serves &#8220;three.&#8221;
