{"id":12001,"date":"2014-08-25T08:16:09","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T15:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/?p=12001"},"modified":"2014-08-25T08:16:09","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T15:16:09","slug":"skyline-frozen-chili-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.peterstromquist.com\/?p=12001","title":{"rendered":"Skyline Frozen Chili Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/skyline-cihli.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12004\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/skyline-cihli-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Skyline Chili Review\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>I have had a few words to say about the massive coney island\u00a0or chili dog\u00a0infatuation that exists in Ohio, particularly between two rival chains, <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2009\/06\/cincinnati-oh-gold-star-and-skyline\/http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2009\/06\/cincinnati-oh-gold-star-and-skyline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyline and Gold Star<\/a>. \u00a0In the past I tried out <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2009\/09\/cincy-chili-day-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyline&#8217;s dry spice packet<\/a> and found the results ultra satisfactory. \u00a0 (I think the dry packet is from Skyline, even tho the brand is &#8220;Skytime&#8221; and the package is labeled &#8220;Cincinnati Style Chili.&#8221; Some disgruntled family member?)<\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;m checking out Skyline&#8217;s frozen &#8220;Original Chili,&#8221; which can be microwaved or heated on the stove top.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients include: \u00a0beef, water, tomato paste, yeast, corn starch, spices, salt, onion, garlic, paprika and natural flavors.<\/p>\n<p>The chili is produced at Skyline&#8217;s own plant, \u00a0(USDA est 1691) \u00a0at \u00a04180 Thunderbird Lane, in Fairfield, OH, which according to Google maps, appears to be in the image below. \u00a0It&#8217;s important to me that a brand has control of its manufacturing, rather than contracting it out to someone else, which is very common today.<\/p>\n<p>You can get the goods at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skylinechili.com\/where-to-buy.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grocers in about a dozen states<\/a>, or order some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/store.cincyfavorites.com\/skyline-kits-c9.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">products direct online<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve ordered the dry mix packages \u00a0through Amazon. \u00a024 packages for $37, which includes shipping. \u00a0If you want the best results, <strong>follow the packet instructions precisely<\/strong>. \u00a0The only variation I&#8217;ve done is to add more ground beef and simmered longer, \u00a0just my preference for a \u00a0very meaty, crumbly sauce.<\/p>\n<p>This frozen pack is easy-peasy, five minutes in the microwave and you&#8217;re ready for your coney\/chili dog. \u00a0I love the flavor and the convenience. \u00a0The main difference you&#8217;ll find between using the dry spice packets and this preparation, is like I previously said, I use more ground beef with the dry mix. \u00a0Beef in the frozen version? \u00a0Eh, not so much. \u00a0Maybe less than 10% by volume? \u00a0More reminiscent of the &#8220;hot dog sauces&#8221; of the deep south than of Detroit style coneys. \u00a0In the pic below, of the sauce out of the microwave, but still in the tray, you can see a little oil slick, and to me, that&#8217;s <strong>ALWAYS<\/strong> a good sign for coney sauce. \u00a0I used <a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/2013\/07\/home-cookin-wisconsin-wieners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Wisconsin<\/a> natural casing wieners, my current favorite.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared them in the traditional coney style, with a squirt of yellow mustard, diced onion and sauce.
