Add a couple sides and drinks and you&#8217;re easily at the hundred dollar market for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Frequently you&#8217;ll see &#8216;filets&#8217; on sale at grocery stores, personally sized portions, usually about four ounces, for anywhere between $4.99 &#8211; $9.99.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine my surprise when I found a bunch from &#8220;Great American Steak Company&#8221; for $1.99 each.<\/p>\n<p>Great American is a retail brand of \u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanfoodsgroup.com\/page.asp?pageid=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Foods Group<\/a>, part of the Rosen&#8217;s Group, a diversified operator founded in 1946 in Fairmont, Minnesota, about 100 miles southwest of Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Among their other brands are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanfoodsgroup.com\/newafg\/shebhome\/index.asp?cid=1&amp;lid=1 \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheboygan Sausage Company<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanfoodsgroup.com\/shebhome\/index.asp?lid=32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big City Reds Hot Dogs<\/a>. \u00a0According to the USDA plant number on the packaging, this beef was processed at another Rosen subsidiary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanfoodsgroup.com\/shebhome\/index.asp?lid=40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skylark Packing<\/a> in Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>At the price, I was &#8216;afraid&#8217; the product would be not real muscle meat, but instead a rolled or &#8216;pressed chopped and formed&#8217; piece of beef. \u00a0I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The steak was a moist, flavorful single cut of beef, wrapped in bacon. \u00a0Wish I had bought a hundred.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11395\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140417_170845.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11395  \" alt=\"Great American Steak Review\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140417_170845-677x1024.jpg\" width=\"365\" height=\"553\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Packaging<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11396\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140417_173536.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11396  \" alt=\"Great American Steak Review\" src=\"http:\/\/burgersdogspizza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140417_173536-1024x757.jpg\" width=\"430\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Filet cooked medium, cut in half<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Great American Steak Company Reviews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve been to one of America&#8217;s premier steakhouse chains like Ruth&#8217;s Chris, Mortons, Smith &amp; Wollensky, or an upmarket independent operator in your local market, like me, it&#8217;s likely you have paid $30 &#8211; $50 for a premium beef filet, usually around 6 ounces.
